4 things women who are starting their fitness journey need to know
I’ve been privileged to work with hundreds of women over the past 8 years, but, every time I work with these superstar woman, I’m met with the same beliefs and thoughts of what they ‘should’ be doing to achieve their goals rather than doing what actually works.
So, I’m setting the record straight right here, right now & together, we’re going to take a dive into the 5 most important things women starting their fitness journey’s need to know:
Diets are not your friend & you don’t need one to achieve your goals.
This one often baffles women because we’re constantly told that we ‘need’ to be on a diet if we want to look like the people we see on social media & in magazines.
This is absolutely FALSE.
To set the record straight, diets don’t work and never will, they’re a short-term fix and more than 95% of the time, any weight that is lost on diets is often put back on because it’s not maintainable.
Instead, your goal is to eat with balance & moderation. Eat a variety of foods such as fruits, vegetables, lentils, whole grains, lean meats & enjoy the food you eat (you can absolutely enjoy chocolate as part of a balanced diet- I know I do!).
2. Do a form of exercise you actually enjoy
Now this is an important one!
So many times, I’ve seen women going for runs or doing rigorous forms of cardio training because they think they ‘have to’ in order to achieve their goals (which, more often than not is to loose weight). Not the case!
Do the exercise & the form of movement you love. Your body will love you for it & you’ll actually want to stick to it. There are no rules here either!
Whether you walk your dog, join us for a live-streamed group fitness class, dance in your living room for 30 minutes- it doesn’t matter! Do it because you love it.
3. Eat a balance of carbohydrates, fats & proteins- don’t cut the carbs!
So many women think they need to ‘cut out carbs’ to feel great & reach their aesthetic goals. I’ll keep this short, but ultimately, if you’re doing that, you’re going to crash & burn. Carbohydrates are the brains preferred source of energy, they’re also what your body needs to function (aka they regulate your hormones, give you energy & are required for a lot of processes in your body).
Keep the right carbs in your diet: whole meal breads & pastas, legumes, fruits & vegetables.
Keep less of the not as good carbs: White bread/ pastas, confectionary, processed foods. Keep these as a ‘sometimes’ food. You can still enjoy them in moderation!
4. Do the exercises that feel right for where your body is at
We’re often fed the message of ‘more is more’, but when it comes to starting your fitness journey, just remember often the opposite is true.
It’s important you listen to your body closely all throughout your fitness journey, but especially when starting a new form of exercise.
Moderate how you feel when doing certain exercises and if you’re noticing any tension or tightness, it may be a sign that area needs some extra TLC: a massage, foam rolling or even, a rest day (don’t be scared to take one).
Trust me, your body will thank you for it!
