3 things you need to be doing when starting out on your fitness journey

So, you’re ready to start your fitness journey- YAY you!

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from working in the fitness industry for almost a decade, it’s that often, there are so many things that can get in the way of people having long-term success on their journey. SO, we put together our top pieces of advice for ensuring you stick to your goals, stay focused and have fun along the way.

1.    Stop overthinking it

Do you ever find yourself thinking “ok, I’ll start working out tomorrow” or “I’ll make myself a delicious healthy breakfast, tomorrow” or “I’ll go for a walk someday soon then I’ll start feeling better”.

If you answered yes to any of the above or in general, find yourself thinking about starting, but just can’t seem to find the motivation to, stop overthinking it and take small action now.

  • Go for a 10 minute walk

  • Instead of snacking on a bag of chips, switch it up for carrot sticks & rice crackers with a hummus dip

  • Instead of sitting and watching TV at night, whilst watching TV, do 10 minutes of stretching to help you move and feel good

Small action leads to bigger, more sustained action!

2.    Break it down & take off the pressure

Telling yourself that you need a fitness overhaul is a sure fire way to overwhelm yourself.

Start small and take off the pressure to have the ‘perfect’ workout or eat a completely clean, lean and healthy dinner every single night of the week. We’re human and sometimes things just don’t go to plan!

Aim to be 10% better every day, and in doing so, you’ll find that you’re creating better habits along the way.

  • Doing a LFN Pilates class at the start of your day

  • Park your car further away from your office so you can walk extra steps

  • Aim to get in at least 10,000 steps every day

3.    Do what you enjoy

If theres one thing that screams I’m not going to stick to my new worout/ eating plan it’s doing things you really, really dislike.

Whether that’s going to the gym and lifting heavy weights or forcing yourself to run, just don’t do what you don’t enjoy. Fitness & great nutrition are both meant to be fun!

So, don’t feel the need to cut out all the foods that make you happy (aka dark chocolate- we can’t go past that) and do the form of movement you love (for us it’s online classes, Pilates & walking).
